The march
Police estimated that 45,000 people took part in Sunday’s march, while organisers put attendance at around 60,000, Euronews reported. The protest was organised by Climate Coalition.
Aimen Horch, a Green politician from Flanders and Brussels, told Euronews that the human toll of climate change was already being felt in Europe.
Five demands
Climate Coalition listed five key demands, Euronews reported: phasing out fossil fuel subsidies and taxing the fossil fuel sector; more green spaces; a fair climate transition; more support for citizens and businesses to move away from fossil fuels; and more international co-operation in fighting climate change.
Low expectations for COP31
The march came ahead of the UN climate summit in Antalya, Turkey, next month, where hopes for a breakthrough remain low, Euronews reported. The European Commission recently proposed delaying a methane emissions law by one year, from 2027 to 2028.
