The move
Bloomberg reported that the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF sank 27% in New York pre-market trading on Monday, and that a currency derivatives contract implied a real at 5.55 per dollar. EODData shows the fund closing at $31.49, down 26.06% from $42.59, after touching $29.53.
Why so violent
MarketWatch reported that real futures initially fell close to 10% and Ibovespa futures were near their exchange limits, down almost 15%. Investors had expected a Bolsonaro victory to bring tighter fiscal policy; that trade is being closed in one session.
Background
Brazil's fiscal path, debt load and borrowing costs were the main market concerns going into the vote. A narrow, contested result adds political risk on top.
Our view
A one-day fall of this size prices in a lot of bad news at once. The test is whether Lula's finance team can offer a credible fiscal anchor before the selling spreads to local bonds.
