The deal

Verizon lifted its outlook and signed an Amazon deal worth more than $2 billion, The Wall Street Journal reported. CNBC said the agreement uses Verizon fibre to connect AWS data centres for distributed AI computing.

The numbers

Verizon now expects 1.1 million to 1.2 million postpaid phone net additions this year, adjusted earnings per share of $5.04 to $5.06 and free cash flow growth of about 12%, according to CNBC's report on the third-quarter results.

Background

US carriers have been under pressure this month from SpaceX's push into mobile spectrum. Selling capacity to hyperscalers gives Verizon a growth story outside handsets.

Our view

The fibre in the ground is becoming an AI asset. Telecoms that can lease it to the cloud giants have found a new buyer at a useful moment.
