A brief post
Trump’s social media post said only that the ceasefire took effect immediately, adding: “Do not break it!”, the Associated Press reported via PBS.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the announcement but said Russian attacks were continuing, including a strike on a power plant in Kharkiv after Trump’s post, AP reported.
Conditions and history
Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready to refrain from striking Russian energy infrastructure if Russia did the same, according to AP. On September 14, Trump made a similar claim that both countries had agreed not to hit each other’s energy infrastructure, but nothing came of it, AP noted.
Zelenskyy also said Ukraine could hold elections if Russia agreed to a 60-day ceasefire, AP reported. The death toll from a recent Russian strike in Zaporizhzhia rose to 23, according to AP.
