Hours before Election Day voting in America's midterms, the Supreme Court has turned down a Trump administration request over California ballots. According to The Washington Post, the administration wanted the state to set aside the ballots of more than 20,000 residents it says may be noncitizens.

The court's order was brief and unsigned. It gave no reason, showed no dissents, and came only hours after the appeal was filed, without asking California to respond. The Post calls it the latest setback for a Justice Department legal campaign over how states run their elections.

A federal judge in Los Angeles, and then a divided appeals court, had already refused the same request. California disputes the federal list.

Researchers working with an immigrant rights group say about 9,000 of the names, more than 40%, are not on the state's voter rolls at all. Independent reviews and court findings show that voting by noncitizens is rare, the Post reports.

The White House did not immediately respond to the Post's request for comment.
